Felix Lindeman was the first to have a general mercantile store on this site (visible at far left in 1909 photo on page 6). That business later belonged to a Mr. Wagner who entered into a partnership with A. J. Weber around 1916 to form the Wagner and Weber Store with the slogan “Your Patronage Appreciated.” The original building was destroyed by fire in the late 1920s. It was rebuilt with the present red brick front in 1929. The Wagner and Weber partnership lasted until 1942 when Weber bought out Wagner and changed the name to the A. J. Weber Grocery, retaining the “patronage” slogan.
Between 1956, when Weber retired, and the present, a wide variety of businesses have occupied the building. One of the better known (and most popular) was “The Welcome Inn,” a beer and pool hall run by Werner Berg. Later, after Berg sold the building, it was the home of The Furniture Showroom, Merle Norman Cosmetics, H. D. Moore Company, Dowdy Cabinets, a Mexican restaurant, Sweet Memories (an ice cream and antique store), and in 1996, Hill County Real Estate.
The building has been vacant since Uptown Blanco purchased the buildings on this side of the square.
